Couple Therapy

"The first duty of love is to listen"

Paul Tillich

I have been providing therapy for couples for 15 years in a range of settings:

  • NHS Primary Care Team
  • Private Practice
  • Voluntary sector.

My Approach

Many forms of couple therapy focus on the communication between couples and how to improve this. Often this is very helpful and resolves the difficulties the couple are experiencing with one another.

However for some couples this is not sufficient. These couples tend to report that as their relationship has broken down because they have felt deeply wounded by their partner's behaviour. This may result in a breakdown of trust in the relationship and feelings of anger, sadness and even despair.

I offer Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (Johnson and Greenberg), which uses the theories of attachment (Bowlby) to attend to the emotional wounding that each partner has suffered in the relationship. Each partner can then begin to heal, learn to trust their partner again and rebuild their relationship.

COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

I offer both Short-term and Long-term work.

Short-term counselling is likely to be of benefit when the difficulties we are experiencing are mainly based in the present.  Long-term work is likely to be more appropriate when the difficulties we are experiencing in the present are rooted in the past.
